01/17/2008 SCAD to host daylong global warming symposium: SCAD is one of more than 1,200 colleges participating in nationwide event SAVANNAH, Ga. — The Savannah College of Art and Design will host a Focus the Nation Teach-in Thursday, Jan. 31, 8 a.m.-5:30 p.m., at , 216 E. Broughton St. The teach-in will gather SCAD students, faculty and community members for a full-day discussion of issues that address global warming and personal responsibility. The event is free and open to the public. SCAD is one of more than 1,200 colleges nationwide conducting such an event.
The event, organized by SCAD's Council for Sustainability and Eco-practices, will include five hour-long discussion sessions, each featuring three speakers. Sessions are scheduled to begin at 8:15 a.m., 9:30 a.m., 11 a.m., 12:30 p.m. and 2 p.m. A “Next Steps” brainstorming session begins at 3 p.m., where participants can provide input regarding actions to take locally and globally to affect change.
SCAD President Paula S. Wallace has issued the following statement regarding SCAD’s involvement in the teach-in: “The global warming issue needs creative solutions, and that’s where SCAD comes in. Leading change and innovation is a tradition at SCAD. Our legacy of preserving and recycling historic properties is a part of that tradition, and we’re thinking wider, broader and greener every day. The Focus the Nation Teach-in at SCAD is one way for us to do just that: to brainstorm as an institution, to think collectively and creatively, to consider the future and what we can do to shape it. Congratulations to all the students and faculty who are creating, designing and working with and for the environment.”
The topics on the day’s agenda include community stewardship, product packaging, corporate responsibility, transportation and local action influencing climate change. SCAD’s environmental student group Project Green will present, as will members of the SCAD faculty from the schools of Design, Building Arts, Liberal Arts, and Film and Digital Media. Community members slated to appear include Clara Fischel and Tommy Linstroth of Melaver Inc.; Don McLemore of Herty Advanced Materials; and Sean Brandon from the City of Savannah.
A full schedule will be available at the event. Linstroth also will be available to sign copies of his new book, “Local Action: The New Paradigm in Climate Change Policy.”
A screening of the 2007 film “The 11th Hour,” which discusses how the earth has reached a tipping point regarding global warming, will follow the teach-in at 6 p.m. The film is produced and narrated by Leonardo DiCaprio. The screening is free and open to the public, and is presented by the SCAD office of innovative teaching and learning.
Named one of Kaplan’s “25 cutting-edge schools with an eye toward the future,” the Savannah College of Art and Design is a private, nonprofit, accredited institution with locations in Atlanta and Savannah, Ga., and in Lacoste, France. Undergraduate and graduate degree programs also are offered online through SCAD-eLearning. The college offers Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Fine Arts, Master of Architecture, Master of Arts, Master of Arts in Teaching, Master of Fine Arts, and Master of Urban Design degrees.
