Savannah College of Art and Design announces Sand Arts Festival winners

Sand castle winner

The castle ruin by Thomas Michael Battjes, Robert Fleming and Yanni Davros won first place in the sand castle competition.
SAVANNAH, Ga. — The Savannah College of Art and Design held its annual Sand Arts Festival Friday, May 2, at Tybee Island. Thousands of visitors viewed temporary sand art masterpieces created on the island’s north beach. More than 300 SCAD students competed for cash prizes.

The following is a complete list of winners:


Sand Sculpture
  • First place: “Armor-plated Whale,” Elizabeth Winnel, illustration, Lansdowne, Ontario, Canada; Will Penny, painting, Woodstock, Ontario, Canada; Jonathan Yoerger, printmaking, Carmel, Ind.
  • Second place: “Octopus,” Alyssa Couturier, fashion, Griswold, Conn.; Jesse Herndon, painting, Starkville, Miss. 
  • Third place: “Alligator,” Matt Rutenbar, animation, West Chester, Pa.; Allison De La Cruz, fashion, Crystal Lake, Ill.; Amanda Harding, interior design, Middleboro, Mass.; Capucine Gros, painting, Shanghai, China

Sand Castle
  • First place: “Castle Ruin,” Thomas Michael Battjes, architecture, Fennville, Mich.; Robert Fleming, industrial design, Fayetteville, Ga.; Yanni Davros, animation, Shaker Heights, Ohio
  • Second place: “Drip Castle,” Jazzmyn Howington, illustration, Navarre, Fla.; Jesse Bruch, interactive design and game development, Fanwood, N.J.; Kathryn Infererra, advertising design, Middletown, Conn.
  • Third place: “Tall Castle,” Brian Bremges, undecided, Scitate, R.I.; Corey Koberna, graphic design, Chagrin Falls, Ohio; Jon Cooper, undecided, Tyrone, Ga.; Jake Shealy, film and television, Fayetteville, Ga.

Sand Relief
  • First place: “Medallion with Three Heads,” Suye Yang, broadcast design and motion graphics, Beijing, China; Yi Hsin Lee, graphic design, Taipei, Taiwan; Chi Hsin Yang, graphic design, Taipei,Taiwan; Trista Coy, Graphic Design, Versailles Ky.
  • Second place: “Yin Yang Dolphins,” Lei Zhang, animation, Beijing, China; Ji Li, animation, Chong Qing, China; Xiaoyan Yin
  • Third place: “Crab with Shell,” Matthew Orlando, interactive design and game development, Tavenier, Fla.; Jade Nellans, illustration, Atlas, Mich; Pat Purcell, sequential art, Apple Valley, Minn.

Wind Sculpture
  • First place: “Seagulls-Ocean-Fish,” Janie Stamm, animation, Pembroke Pines, Fla.
  • Second place: “Red Kite in the Sky,” Benjamin Washington, undecided, Brooklyn, N.Y.
  • Third place: “Reflective Mirrors,” Alexandra Coward, graphic design, Miami; Alexander Jones, interactive design and game development, Blythewood, S.C.

Gray’s Reef Sea Creature Contest Winners
