SCAD-Atlanta presents "Perishable Constructions" by Karen-Sam Norgard

Karen Sam Norgard, Short Lived, giclee printATLANTA -- Savannah College of Art and Design foundation studies professor Karen-Sam Norgard will have a new body of work on display June 27-Aug. 11 in Trois Gallery, SCAD-Atlanta, 1600 Peachtree St., Atlanta. A reception will be held July 15 as part of the SCAD-Atlanta Gallery Hop. Both the exhibition and the reception are free and open to the public, and free on-site parking is available.

For "Perishable Constructions," Norgard created ephemeral dress forms from natural materials found in White's Cove, Nova Scotia. She memorializes these constructions in a series of digital images.

Norgard said that what awakened her interest in all things impermanent was the beauty of the Tibetan sand mandalas. Over time, she developed her own perishable-construction format. Like the mandalas, her creations remain where they are constructed, eventually returning to natural forms through wind, sea or decay. The digital prints act as a record.

As a subject, the dress provides the image of a thin layer, separating the interior and the exterior, the private and the public. Norgard explained that she uses the dress format to imply or disclose feelings that live on either side of this fabric divider.

The work featured in "Perishable Constructions" was funded in part by a Savannah College of Art and Design Presidential Fellowship for Faculty Development.
