Welcome

Architects create the built environment. They synthesize issues of human need, environmental setting, building technology, visual perception and aesthetic theory to create buildings and spaces where people live, work, shop, learn, worship, play and entertain.

Faculty in the architecture department and throughout the School of Building Arts offer a wide range of perspectives and qualifications including LEED certification and membership in the American Institute of Architects, American Society of Landscape Architects, and American Planning Association.

Students explore the discipline of architecture within the broader context of visual arts, including historic preservation and interior design.

Savannah’s National Historic Landmark District is an ideal setting for the study of architecture. The city is based on one of the most admired urban plans in the world.

The department is housed in Eichberg Hall, a historically significant building constructed in 1887 for the Central of Georgia Railroad and rehabilitated for reuse by SCAD.
SCAD is the first college or university in the South to become an institutional member of the United States Green Building Council, a rating and benchmarking system for the construction, design and operation of high-performance green buildings.

The five-year, professional Master of Architecture degree offered by SCAD is accredited by the National Architectural Accrediting Board.

In the United States, most state registration boards require a degree from an accredited professional degree program as a prerequisite for licensure. The National Architectural Accrediting Board, which is the sole agency authorized to accredit U.S. professional degree programs in architecture, recognizes three types of degrees: the Bachelor of Architecture, the Master of Architecture and the Doctor of Architecture. A program may be granted a six-year, three-year or two-year term of accreditation, depending on the extent of its conformance with established educational standards. Master’s degree programs may consist of a pre-professional undergraduate degree and a professional graduate degree, that, when earned sequentially, constitute an accredited professional education. However, the pre-professional degree is not, by itself, recognized by the NAAB as an accredited degree. The Savannah College of Art and Design professional M.Arch. degree program holds the maximum six-year term of accreditation from the NAAB.

SCAD is an institutional member of the Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture, and has active chapters of the American Institute of Architecture Students and American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-conditioning Engineers.

The School of Building Arts client/server network is configured with electronic design software including Bentley MicroStation V8, Adobe Photoshop and InDesign CS3, 3D Studio VIZ, SURFCAM, AutoCAD, Autodesk Maya and Revit.

The postprofessional Master of Architecture program offers an emphasis in urban design or electronic design.
