Update: Oct. 26, 2009
The H1N1 influenza is affecting communities across the United States. County and city officials in Savannah and Atlanta have been working to combat the H1N1 virus in a variety of ways. As the federal government announced this week, production of the H1N1 vaccine is behind schedule, and for this reason the vaccine is in limited supply.

Local health officials are hopeful they will receive the injection form of the H1N1 vaccine and additional doses of the seasonal vaccine by early November. Once these supplies are available, SCAD will coordinate with the appropriate local health care officials and other vendors to schedule times for H1N1 vaccinations at SCAD. This schedule will be posted on the SCAD Web site as soon as the vaccine is available.
Update: Sept. 11, 2009
The fall quarter is already here, which means thousands of brilliant students will soon be arriving at SCAD from around the world. To help make this a safe and successful school year, the university is taking precautions to protect the SCAD family from the H1N1 virus, commonly known as swine flu. We are encouraged that, at present, there have been no reports of the virus among SCAD students, faculty or staff.

In this vigilant effort, SCAD is following procedures suggested by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Later this fall, the university plans to have vaccine shots available at SCAD for both the H1N1 and seasonal flu, and we will make widespread announcements to students when both vaccines are available. We encourage students to participate in this immunization program when it is announced. Class absences, of course, are another concern. And so, please be aware of the following:
  • SCAD students who experience flu-like symptoms should not attend class until 24 hours after symptoms subside.
  • If a SCAD student plans to stay home, he or she must contact the professor in advance of the class meeting, when possible, or within a minimum of 24 hours after the class meeting.
  • SCAD students are encouraged not to squander their allowed absences early in the quarter, in case they should become ill later in the term.
  • SCAD students who contract the virus may be granted leniency with the attendance policy, but must complete all required assignments and attain all required learning outcomes to receive credit for each course. The professor and SCAD administrators will review cases on an individual basis.

Additionally, these basic preventative steps can help stop the spread of the flu virus:
  • Cover nose and mouth when you cough or sneeze.
  • Wash hands often with soap and water or an alcohol-based hand cleaner.
  • Avoid touching eyes, nose, or mouth.
  • Avoid close contact with those who are ill.
  • Get plenty of sleep, be physically active, and eat right.
  • Learn to identify early symptoms of the flu: fever, body aches, and cough.
  • Stay home from work or school and schedule an appointment with your physician at the first sign of these symptoms.

As an added preventative measure, SCAD is placing dispensers of hand sanitizer throughout all facilities, and we are taking extra measures to clean surfaces in public areas.

Please know that we will continue to follow all CDC guidelines and will work with local and state officials to ensure the health and safety of all members of the SCAD family.

Students and faculty may direct their questions to:

NurseOne

Memorial University Medical Center's 24-hour call center, NurseOne, provides telephone nurse triage, physician referral, and health information. The call center is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. NurseOne can be reached by dialing 912-350-WELL (9355) or 800-420-WELL (9355).

When you call, an experienced registered nurse answers your call and asks a series of questions. Your health information is quickly loaded into a database that determines the best course of action based on nationally approved guidelines. Your nurse will direct you to the appropriate level of care when necessary or tell you how to self-treat the condition at home.

Stay calm

The continuous stream of media reports about H1N1 may cause anyone to feel uneasy or anxious. This is understandable, and the SCAD counseling offices are available as an additional resource for students in Savannah (912.525.6971) or Atlanta (404.253.3404).
