SAVANNAH Ga. - Danny Simmons - Def Jam poet, author, philanthropist and painter - is a true renaissance man. His work will be on display at SCAD's Pinnacle Gallery, 320 E. Liberty St., Oct. 10-Dec. 12 in the exhibition titled "Spiritual Rhythms." As part of the SCAD-Savannah Gallery Hop, an artist's reception will be held Oct. 10, 5-7 p.m., with a book-signing event from 5-6 p.m. Both the exhibition and reception are free and open to the public.

Inspired by African spiritual energy and imagery, "Spiritual Rhythms" brings together pairs of Simmons' new paintings with those done within the last five years. Side by side, these abstract expressionistic works reveal pattern shifts while maintaining a familiar visual language.

"Each pair draws awareness to the paintings' rhythmic dialogue through a dynamic visual tension created by the differences between the earlier work and the most recent painting," said Erin Dziedzic, SCAD's curator of exhibitions. "The earlier linear works explore a visual system of language while Simmons' most recent paintings and drawings have much less negative space. The true energy of the spirits uniting takes on the abstract forms."

Simmons' vibrant brush strokes peering from behind a predominant color build intrigue and mystery in his work.

Simmons is also widely known for his accomplishments and endeavors in the arts. Along with his brothers, Simmons founded Rush Philanthropic Arts Foundation. The foundation provides disadvantaged urban youth with significant exposure and access to the arts, and provides exhibition opportunities to under-represented and minority artists. He also founded and runs Corridor Gallery in Brooklyn.

In the early 1990s, a group of Simmons' friends frequently gathered to perform at open microphone nights and art galleries. HBO's Def Poetry show evolved out of the group's ideas and success.
