The Savannah College of Art and Design announces the addition of scientific illustration as a new minor program for Fall 2008. Scientific illustration is the combination of aesthetics and accuracy, art and science. It is a form of communication that affords the student the opportunity to explore in a variety of media including pencil, paint, clay and computer graphics.

An unprecedented collaboration of majors — illustration, photography, sequential art, interactive design and game development, and animation departments — has been designed to offer students the tools and skills necessary to lead in this demanding field. The faculty is considered leaders in the scientific illustration field, and has generated a series of courses that will accentuate the “hands-on” and “real-world” experience gained through fieldwork.

Careers and Industry Partnerships
Key research institutions, such as Oatland Island Educational Center, Triebold Paleontology and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, have also collaborated with SCAD to provide students with professional industry experience that can be translated into future career opportunities. This includes opportunities in medical illustration, earth sciences, botany, wildlife illustration, mechanical illustration, information graphics, natural science illustration, cartography, museum exhibitions, astronomy illustration, archaeology, anthropology and paleontology.
