SCAD welcomes top interaction designers and student competitions during the third annual IxDA conference

Published: Oct 28, 2009

SAVANNAH, Ga.–Looking to network with some of the biggest names in interaction design? The Savannah College of Art and Design is hosting Interaction 10, the third conference of the Interaction Design Association (IxDA), in Savannah, Ga., Feb. 4-7, 2010. This year’s conference is co-chaired by Bill DeRouchey from Ziba Design and Jennifer Bove from Kicker Studio.

Approximately 450 people attended the 2008 inaugural event hosted by SCAD and the 2010 conference is expected to be even bigger. More speakers, a student competition, first-time art exhibition, local design challenge and community documentaries offer new opportunities for participation by conference attendees, the SCAD community and local designers. Plenary sessions are taking place at Trustees Theater and other venues include the Jen Library, Reynolds Square, the ballroom at The Olde Pink House, and an art gallery at the newly preserved Kennedy Pharmacy Building.

Keynote speakers include award-winning industrial designer Bill Moggridge, founder of IDEO, one of the most successful design firms in the world. Moggridge designed the first laptop computer, the GRiD Compass, and pioneered interaction design as a discipline. Also speaking is curator of the Department of Design and Architecture at the Museum of Modern Art, New York, Paola Antonelli, who was recently rated as one of the top 100 most powerful people in the world of art by Art Review. Former SCAD professor Jon Kolko, who is now at frog design in Austin, Texas, will be speaking, in addition to other industry leaders Nathan Shedroff, Ezio Manzini and Dan Hill.

SCAD and IxDA share the common goal of furthering the discipline of interaction design, and fostering relationships between design professionals and the next generation of designers. This has led to many firsts at the upcoming conference. The first Global Student Competition, themed “Excellence in Interaction Design,” is open to any individual student or recent graduate (within one year). Students and professional designers can submit work to the first Interaction Exhibition, coinciding with the Interaction 10 conference. This exhibition will explore the concept of interaction between people, with tools and with technology. Also, in collaboration with IxDA, The Creative Coast Alliance is accepting submissions for a professional design challenge, the results of which will have a direct impact on the creative professionals and businesses of Savannah. Another groundbreaking opportunity is a call for submissions for a documentary video tackling one of the questions, “What is design interaction?” and “What do we do?”

“Interaction design is not the design of a medium but rather a philosophical shift in how to design for any medium. It answers the questions of why, how and what with a new lens and expanded impact,” said Dave Malouf, SCAD professor of interaction design.
