SAVANNAH, Ga.–The Savannah College of Art and Design presents “Circling the Center” by distinguished visiting faculty Nene Humphrey that employs performance, installation and collaboration across artistic disciplines. The exhibition will be on display at Pinnacle Gallery, 320 E. Liberty St., Nov. 11- Dec. 30. The performance by Nene Humphrey, along with SCAD alumnus Roberto Lange, artist Julie DeLano, and SCAD students, faculty, alumni and staff will take place Nov. 13, 7 p.m., and is followed by a panel discussion and reception, 7:30-8:30 p.m. In conjunction with the inaugural deFINE ART festival, the exhibition, performance and reception are free and open to the public.

“Circling the Center uses the drum circle, one of the oldest forms of human communication, the craft of Victorian mourning braiding, and the sounds generated during the fabrication process as its conceptual underpinning and physical structure,” Humphrey said. The exhibition showcases individual weavings made by all participants, combined to create a central structure of woven wire elements based on Victorian mourning braids.

Additional works of art on display include a selection of Humphrey’s recent mixed media pieces inspired by scientific patterning, which serves to engage and inform the viewer of her process and inspirations.

Humphrey earned an M.F.A. degree from York University in Toronto and an M.A. degree from Goddard College in Plainfield, Vt. She has taught at New York University, University of Maryland, Baltimore, and the University of Connecticut.

Her work is included in the permanent collections of art centers including the Smithsonian, Washington, D.C.; the High Museum of Art, Atlanta, Ga.; Wilfredo Lam Contemporary Art Center, Havana, Cuba; The Museum of Contemporary Art of Georgia, Atlanta; and the Ogden Museum at the University of New Orleans.

In 2004, Humphrey created "Weaving Geographies," an exhibition of sculptural works inspired by the Miao people at SCAD's Pei Ling Chan gallery.
