Professional Writing

Awards and Recognition
At the first-ever Writer's Assembly at SCAD-Savannah April 14, professional writing professor Adam Davies read an excerpt from his third novel "Mine All Mine." Davies' other books, "The Frog King" and "Goodbye Lemon," also are available at bookstores nationwide. Author and screenwriter David Benioff reviewed "Mine All Mine": "If Raymond Chandler had a deranged sense of humor, if Nick Hornby dabbled in thrillers, if Philip K. Dick were not dead-they might have collaborated on a book as strange and strangely wonderful as ‘Mine All Mine'. A rollicking, rocking good read." Read more.

Professional Writing program

Professional Writing

Professional Writing (hand writing) The Savannah College of Art and Design offers B.F.A. and M.F.A. degrees in professional writing at the SCAD-Savannah and SCAD-Atlanta locations through the School of Liberal Arts.

The professional writing program prepares contemporary students for careers in a global society that demands communication through the written word. Students experience a comprehensive approach to writing, with particular attention given to professional practices and the commercial applicability of their work.

Small class size promotes critiques, careful reading and consideration of what makes good writing: observation and analytical skills, fine discriminations, linguistic originality, commercial and marketplace considerations, and a compassion for the human condition. These can be achieved through a disciplined sense of voice, context, audience and integrity of intention. Comprehensive knowledge of form, content, and technique is emphasized.

Visiting authors explain the practical aspects of professional writing, share their work and offer feedback to student writers. Tom Wolfe, Amy Tan, Edward Albee, Tama Janowitz, Augusten Burroughs and others have visited the college to share their work and the concerns that inform their writing processes. Practical experience is available through internships, through the college's Student Media Center and through the college's literary journals.
